he
late 60's and early 70's saw the steady deterioration
of Hindi film music, and before one could say K.L. Saigal,
the disco trend had caught on youngsters who preferred the
wild beats of western pop and disco music to the lilting tunes
of Hindi films. It was during that time a music form which
gradually but definitely became popular was 'ghazals'. Begum
Akhtar had her following of ghazal lovers. Then came Mehdi
Hassan's trip to India . His live shows were well-attended
and cassettes of his ghazals sold well. He was followed by
his fellow countryman, Ghulam Ali, who became equally
well-known. These Pakistani singers reached the remotest towns
of India via cassettes. On this side of the border, the Indian
couple Jagjit and Chitra Singh, the ghazal exponents
did live shows and sang at private mehfils. Having seen the
success of Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali, HMV put out a disc
of Jagjit and Chitra Singh. During that period Sanjeev
Kohli, son of Madan Mohan, discovered a singer called
Talat Aziz , who was young, good-looking, malleable
and above all, he had a good voice. Jagjit Singh had already
heard Talat sing at a Mehfil in Hyderabad, so he agreed to
compose his first album; which was phenomenal success. Music
India then decided to experiment Talat on his own - to see
whether he was good enough on his own or whether Jagjit's
name had contributed to the success of the album. But even
his second album and subsequent releases did extremely well. The
rest is
history....
alat
Aziz's true inspiration in ghazal singing is Mehdi Hassan saheb. According to Talat he brought a revolution to ghazal
singing with his unique style of blending classical ragas with
ghazals.
Mehdi
Hassan saheb during his first visit to India, having dinner
at Talat's place in Hyderabad.
fter
completing his graduation, he made a choice to go fully professional
in his musical career. In 1978 he packed his bags and
left Hyderabad to Mumbai to the city of the rich and the famous.
alat
Aziz is a thorough professional who expresses his poetic verses
with great precision collaborating feelings of love, romance
and calamity moulded authentically in a ghazal format. Talat
Aziz is truly the most versatile legends in the world
of ghazal singing.
e
believes that the most important thing about a ghazal is
the mood it weaves with the help of sensitive lyrics, deliberately
underplayed music and rich, soothing tones of the singer.
A ghazal is meant to be heard at sunset; the time
to recuperate from the day's strains or the time to resurrect
and as is usual relish forgotton pains.
1979 his first album titled "Jagjit Singh presents
Talat Aziz" came out and gave him a launch pad for his
meteoric rise. The
sensation created by first ever disc "Jagjit Singh
presents Talat Aziz" 22 years ago seems to be still
lingering on though by now more than dozen discs have been
added to his original works. Perhaps his major plus point
against contemporaries is the knowledge and use of finer aspects
of the classical Indian music which in turn have helped in
moulding his
voice to its present comunificent manner.
ince
then he has released various albums like Talat Aziz live,
Lehren, Ehsaas, Suroor, Manzil, Saughaat, Dhadkan, Irshaad,
etc. He is equally versatile while singing a popular hit
like "Damadam mast Kalandar" or the soul
stirring rendition of "Aaina Mujhse Meri"
from the film Daddy. Between 1979 and 1984
he was the top artist recording for Music India Company.
In 1984, he joined HMV, the giant recording company.

Aziz had the honour of perfoming exclusively for the Prime
Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the New year's
eve. The PM a poet himself, had several farmaaishes(requests), that
included Ghazal's Dil-e-naadaan tujhe hua kya hai and
his favourite, Faiz's Gulon mein rang bhare.Talat Aziz
had also sung a special number for him, Vrindavan Ke Krishna
Kanhaiya, Allah hoo. He had hypnotised
the entire gathering with his soulful renditions
ghazal which were specially written by Nida Fazli for
that occasion. Everybody stayed together till 1am until Aziz
sang Aaj jaane ki zid na karo.

alat
makes his debut as a recording artist under the under the
guidance of the famed exponent of ghazal-singing, Jagjit
Singh. The ghazals, aptly selected by Jagjit himself,
range from the traditional to the modern scintilating tunes
which create an indelible impact. And above all with
the fresh voice of Talat Aziz this
album rocked the world
of music.

alat
Aziz presents images. Images of love and desire, joy and anguish;
images of the varied emotions which a lover experiences. Music
India presents two distinct images of Talat Aziz. In the first
part of this double album, the Talat we all love in 'Jagjit
Singh Presents Talat Aziz' and 'A Touch of Talat Aziz',
with 8 brand
new
ghazals, each composed to captivate the modem listener. The
musical arrangements contribute largely to the appeal of each
ghazal; almost every musical instrument has been utilised
to enhance the appeal of the ghazals. The renditions are light
and modern in style. In short, this is the modern image of
Talat Aziz. On the other hand, in the second part of
the album, Talat Aziz renders the traditional ghazal in the
style of the old veterans. In this part, the Talat as presented
'Talat Aziz Live' and 'Shamakhana, Vol.I' comes
to the fore. The musical accompanists are few in number and
follow a free pattern - it is an experience in unrestricted
creativity. The aura is one of a veritable 'mehfil'. Talat
Aziz has done full justice to each style. It is difficult
to say which style
is he better at. The verdict
is yours. For fans of Talat Aziz this double album is a sheer
delight - here is your favourite on his best album yet, 'IMAGES'.

"uroor"
is the title of this album, a name which has been chosen with
great care. For the eight tracks on this album blend to give
rise to a feeling of intoxication. Spiritual intoxication,
as it were, for the mind absorbs the ghazals and the soul
sings along with the voice that is Talat Aziz, who
has trained under the greatest of names in the ghazal world,
one of them being Mehdi Hassan. No wonder then that
this liquid-golden voice flows the way it does, in perfect
harmony with the music, to scintillate, intoxicate and create
a "SUROOR".

grey packaging with a rainbow for a gift wrapping effect,
'Saughaat' is Talat Aziz's first double album
for HMV. Fourteen ghazals fit into this hi-dynamic range
product. Talat gets credit for "music" while
Uttam Singh is the man responsible for the music
"arrangement". Sardar Anjum emerges
as Talat's pet poet, five tracks being the result of
his flights of fancy. Saughat also features works of
Qamar Jalalabad (one), Rupa Mehta Naghma (three), Bashir
Badr (three) and Ibraheem Ashk (two). 'Phir chalee
baad-e-sabaa' and 'Kabhi hum bhee tumse'
are feathers in the cap of Ashk. Hyberbole and super-ego
colour Sardar Anjums ghazals 'Kitne ujaale andar
aaye' and 'Jeena Hai to', 'Tere gham kee
yeh Saughaaten' is streched to fit the rhyme and
metre. Qamar Jalalabadi provides ideal face for a 'Sharaab
Ghazal'. Rupa's introductory
couplet adds weight to 'Phool dekhe to', a tale
of pining and unfulfilled desire rendered with gut-feeling
by Talat. Talat employs a whole range of instruments,
guitars, sitars, harmonium and violins in Saughaat.
